Understanding Workers' Compensation

This program is pending approval for 1 strategic credit hour through HRCI and SHRM!

Topic Description: 

  • The presentation will provide a general understanding of the workers’ compensation system as a whole with respect to the various issues that come up in litigated claims. As we discuss the various components of a claim, we will highlight the importance of HR/employer involvement and provide tips on how to best manage various parts of a claim.

Jenna Scott is an Associate with Heyl Royster. She focuses her practice on defending clients in workers’ compensation and civil litigation, including in the areas of personal injury claims (premises, auto, and other casualty), product liability, professional liability, and trucking.

Jenna joined the firm’s St. Louis office as an associate following graduation from law school in 2018. She received her J.D. from St. Louis University School of Law in and her Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Bradley University. While in law school, Jenna held multiple leadership positions including, Public Interest Law Group (Two-time Auction Co-Chair), Student Bar Association (Chief of Staff), and Business Law Association (Treasurer), Student Mentor, and Admissions Student Ambassador. After her 1L year, Jenna gained valuable legal experience as an intern for Chief United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Central District of Illinois James Shadid in Peoria.

Jessica Bell is a Partner with Heyl Roster. Jessica focuses her practice on the defense of insurance clients and employers in workers’ compensation matters. She joined the firm with extensive workers’ compensation defense experience, having appeared before the Illinois Workers’ Compensation Commission representing employers and insurance companies across the state. Jessica has also spoken with businesses directly to help assist in their understanding of the Workers’ Compensation system, as well as the handling of claims within their business.

Jessica is a member of the Workers’ Compensation Lawyers’ Association, Peoria County Bar Association, and Illinois State Bar Association. She is a past treasurer and vice-president of the Tazewell County Bar Association and former Tazewell County Assistant State’s Attorney. As an ASA, Jessica appeared before Judges in the 10th Circuit, handling matters ranging from petty offenses to felonies.

Jessica is a 2009 graduate of Saint Louis University School of Law, where she concentrated her studies in employment and labor law, taxation, and business transactions. She is a 2006 graduate of Duquesne University, graduating magna cum laude, with a B.S. in political science, psychology, and sociology.
