CIC-SHRM Clothes for Careers Drive a Success!

Through the membership meeting, the Chapter donated over 1,200 items to Mercy Communities and the Illinois Department of Corrections. Both organizations help individuals prepare for career changes.

As a first-time recipient, Mercy Communities expressed both excitement an appreciation for the donation of professional attire and accessories! Mercy is a transitional program supporting families in Springfield.

The Illinois Department of Corrections partnered this year and received a large donation to help individuals who are reentering the workforce. This partner ship was led by the Springfield YMCA and is encouraged by SHRM’s Second Chance initiative.

Certificates of appreciation will be awarded to Corporate Challenge organizations during the September meeting.

Central Illinois Chapter Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM) Awarded For Elevating Human Resources, Improving Workplaces

SPRINGFIELD, IL, June 24, 2019 — SHRM (the Society for Human Resource Management) recently awarded Central Illinois Chapter Society for Human Resource Management its prestigious EXCEL Platinum Award for the CHAPTER’s accomplishments in 2018.

The EXCEL award aligns individual chapters’ and state councils’ activities with SHRM’s aspirations for the HR profession. The award recognizes major accomplishments, strategic activities, and tactical initiatives that elevate the profession of human resources.

“So much of SHRM’s success in shaping better workplaces—where employers and employees can thrive together— is owed to the hard work of our chapters and state councils such as Central Illinois Chapter Society for Human Resources Management. Through their courage and leadership, Central Illinois Chapter Society for Human Resource Management is driving true, measurable progress toward the healthy, productive, and dynamic workplaces of tomorrow,” said Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., SHRM-SCP, president and chief executive officer of SHRM. “Awarding this Platinum Excel Award is just one small way for SHRM to recognize and celebrate the big steps this chapter has taken this past year.”

The EXCEL Award can be earned at four levels: bronze, silver, gold and platinum. Each level has a prescribed set of requirements and accomplishments that must be met. Central Illinois Chapter Society for Human Resources Management will receive recognition in SHRM publications and at conferences, a logo to display on its website, and information to share with its members about the significance of this award.

This award was achieved by the following collaborative efforts:

Speed Networking a Success!

The UIS Student SHRM Chapter hosted a speed networking event on February 21st to give students an opportunity to develop their networking skills and make connections with local employers. CIC-SHRM chapter members Jill Steiner and Elaine Higgs-Parn participated to provide feedback to the students from an employer’s perspective. It was a fun and engaging learning experience that proved to be beneficial for all who attended. Maria Sorto, a student who attended the event, shared some thoughts on her experience with us.

"I had the pleasure to meet with a few employers (including professionals, supervisors, managers, recruiters, HR representatives). Some of the organizations included the YMCA, Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), and Hospital Sisters Health System among others.

The employer representatives were very knowledgeable in their presentations about the organizations they represented. They explained the services provided to the community by the organizations mentioned above, they went through history information, and the size and the objectives of the organizations.

I would like to focus in on the YMCA represented by Jill Steiner. Jill explained her em-ployer is a local community-based organization that has about 6000 volunteers and 450 employees from what I recalled. Jill’s position does not have the same routine every day. She handles confidential and financial documents and various reports. She runs a pro-gram for people with disabilities, provides behavior management directions, and deals with clients concerns.

Jill’s position sounds like a lot to handle; but an exciting one. She explains how she enjoys doing what she does because it is not the same routine every day at work. The variety of tasks Jill performs takes her away from a regular work routine by putting her mind into different situations the job offers. I enjoyed talking to Jill Steiner and appreciate the in-formation she provided me about her employer. I did learn a lot attending this event and hope to have this experience again in the future." - Maria Sorto

It is CIC-SHRM’s intent to increase our support of the student chapter through various activities throughout the school year so they can continue to strive towards their ca-reer goals upon graduation and into their professional lives. 2018 HR Professional of the Year

Anne Godman, CWCC, CSMC

Congratulations to Anne Godman, Director of Career Services at MacMurry College, Jacksonville, Illinois for being honored by her colleagues as the winner of the CIC-SHRM 2018 HR Professional of the year award. Anne serves on the CIC-SHRM Board as Workforce Development Chair. Prior to her current role, she was the Recognition Chair. She is an integral part of our chapter and she’s dedicated to moving the HR profession forward in our community by helping students interested in HR as a career, and volunteering in various capacity in the HR arena. The HR Professional of the Year is presented to an individual who has demonstrated involvement and commitment to the HR profession, volunteered in the community in helping to move the profession forward, and exhibited exemplary performance in their Human Resources position.

2018 HR Champion

HSHS Medical Group

HSHS Medical Group was presented with the HR Champion award. The HR Champion Award is presented to a business which recognizes HR as an essential "strategic business asset." The organization will have provided recognition, support, and development opportunities for HR professionals and support for the HR operations within their organization. An evident of the support they provide is that all 7 local members of HSHS Medical Group Human Resources team are members of the CIC-SHRM chapter, and three of their colleagues serve on the CIC-SHRM Board. This award is also a reflection of outstanding business leadership qualities.

2018 Diversity and Inclusion

Stephanie Williams, PHR, SHRM-CP

Ms. Stephanie Williams is the Human Resources Coordinator at the Springfield Electric Supply Company, Springfield, IL. She won the Diversity and Inclusion award. Stephanie is currently the Diversity Chair on the CIC-SHRM Board. She is well versed in the Diversity and Inclusion space and has introduced relevant D&I topics to the organization. The Diversity and Inclusion award is presented to a member or an organization that has a CIC-SHRM member that has truly embraced and champion Diversity and Inclusion in their culture.
